There are plenty of free activities in christchurch if you’re traveling on a budget. Here are a few ideas that will help you have a great, and reasonably priced, afternoon.
Christchurch is known as the garden city, and if you take a walk through the Hagley parks and botanic gardens, you’ll know why. Take advantage of these opportunities for a bit of exercise and some beautiful views. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a sunny day in the grass.
Christchurch Transitional Cathedral
Wander around the inside of this cathedral, which was rebuilt in 2013 when the big earthquake ruined the original one. Also known as the Cardboard Cathedral, it actually utilizes a variety of construction materials.
This innovative little mall is made out of colorful shipping containers. It’s just as enjoyable to walk around and window shop, and snap a few pictures along the way.
Walking through hagley park and the botanic gardens will lead you to this free entry museum which will give you a range of Nz history, art and culture. It’s not a proper Christchurch visit if you don’t see this museum. Try to avoid the school groups!
If you have a car, get directions to this beautiful uphill drive just out of the city. You’ll find panoramic views of christchurch and surroundings, and see some of the bluest water you’ll ever see. There are a number of hikes from godley heads, but even if you just want to drive up and back, it’s totally worth it for the views.
