Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is something that is highly necessary, but you hope to never have to use it. It covers everything from medical emergencies, to dental accidents, to having your valuables lost or stolen.  We always think, “It won’t happen to me!” Let me tell you a little story of something that happened to me recently, and i may help you rethink not having insurance.

I was a good little traveler when I renewed my travel insurance for my trip to New Zealand, but because I’m cheap, I didn’t want to pay for more than a few months. (Even though, generally it is way cheaper if you buy for a year).  When I received the email that it was set to expire, I kept putting off the renewal.

“I’ll do it soon…” I repeatedly told myself.

It expired on December 24th.  The next day was Christmas.  I procrastinated on renewing it.  I mean I was just going to hang out in the house with the guy I seeing, all day!  What could happen?

I developed an extremely painful UTI at around 4pm in the afternoon, and finally took an uber to the emergency clinic to get meds for it, after I was running to the bathroom every minute, and simply was giving into the possibility that I was dying.  $200 dollars later (and no insurance), I had a miserable couple weeks of recovery time.

GET TRAVEL INSURANCE.  You never know when something will happen.  It is a great investment, I promise.  Would you rather pay a few hundred for insurance, or a few thousand without insurance?

But with so many options out there, how do you know which one to choose?

My personal favorite is:

Basically, this means the insurance company will be quick and efficient when you enter a claim, you won’t have to wait to talk to someone, as they 24/7.  You can sign up online and it’s all very quick, and it even covers most countries! The company knows full well how exciting backpacking is, and all the crazy activities you might end up doing.  This insurance has two plans:

The main difference between these two is that the Explorer Plan covers more adventure activities if you have an accident.  The standard is still great though if you won’t be doing any crazy activities, or would just like to live on the edge and take the risk.

It is ALWAYS important when buying a travel insurance, to look at exactly what is covered and what isn’t.  Make sure they offer enough medical in case of very bad accidents, and know that most insurances would not cover physicals and pre-existing conditions.  Take a look at the exact plan outline before you purchase.  It will save you a headache if you weren’t aware of any special terms and conditions.

I hope you found this helpful! What is your favorite travel insurance? Have you used World Nomads?
